Up to 70 jobs are under threat at Telewest's business division following a decision by the cableco to restructure the operation in a bid to cut costs.

As well as a management reshuffle, the company is also proposing to merge different parts of its operation in a bid to streamline its business.

Staff were told of the changes yesterday.

Although around 70 people have been warned that they could lose their jobs, Telewest Business said around 32 jobs will be lost at the end of the consultation period.

In a statement Telewest Business said: "As part of our wider strategy focusing on customer service and cost control, we are proposing to reorganise Telewest Business to create a more cohesive management structure.

"Unfortunately this has resulted in 70 positions being placed at risk, and in the reduction of head count by 32. We are entering into an open consultation period with all individuals affected and will try to redeploy staff into alternative roles across the company wherever possible."

This latest news will do little for morale at Telewest's centre in Peterborough, which is one of those locations hit by this news.

Last month workers at Telewest's Business Fault Centre were told that the cableco has decided to cut wages by around £1,100 a year.

Insiders angry at the decision said the pay cut would take a sizeable chunk out of people's salaries. ®
