SiS unveils 16GB quad-channel Rambus chipset

PAT-plus

SiS has launched a Rambus-based chipset aimed at Pentium processors running over an 800MHz effective bit rate frontside bus.

The SiS659 will feature the next generation of SiS' HyperStreaming technology, the Advanced HyperStreaming Engine. AHSE accelerates the movement of bulk data, whether that's information streamed from the Internet or between storage devices, such as video content, through the PC. It targets single streams of data and multiple, parallel streams through a mix of latency reduction, pipelining, real-time access, prioritisation and channel arbitration.

AHSE adds an Intel Performance Acceleration Technology (PAT) style system, "and integrates hardware management and system resource allocation, including the CPU, front side bus, south-bridge chipset, memory controller, graphics interface, and peripheral I/O", says SiS.

The chipset provides a quad-channel memory bus designed to take 1.2GHz RDRAM for 9.6GBps of memory bandwidth. Up to 16GB of memory is supported.

SiSR659 samples will be available in the fourth quarter, the company said. ®
