Nvidia GeForce 6600GT pics pop up on Web

Mid-range PCI Express-native parts

Nvidia's upcoming GeForce 6600 series - based on the NV43 chip - has made another unscheduled appeared on the Web, this time in a series of chip and board shots obtained by Chinese-language site GZEasy.com.

Two mid-range parts are on display: the plain 6600 and the 6600GT, the former clocked at 300MHz, the latter at 500MHz. Exact memory clock frequencies have yet to be decided, the web site reports. However, the GT is said to support up to 128MB of GDDR 3 memory, possibly across a 128-bit bus.

Both chips will appear on PCI Express x16 boards, and are expected to be Nvidia's first chips with native PCI Express support. They are set to supersede the GeForce FX 5750 and 5900. The current 6800 series uses a PCI Express bridge chip - PCI Express native 6800s are expected to surface later this year through the NV48e core.

Derived from the GeForce 6800 GPU, the 6600 series have just eight of the core's 16 pixel pipelines enabled - early reports suggested eight or 12 pipelines. They are said to be fabbed using a 130nm process.

The site suggests the 6600 will cost $149, the 6600GT $199. ®
