Mobile fingers UK's thickest armed robber

Mug shot on camera phone left at the scene

Published Tuesday 30th November 2004 10:39 GMT

Britain's thickest armed blagger (armed robber) was jailed for six years by Bournemouth Crown Court yesterday after leaving his mobile phone containing pictures of himself and his wife at the scene of a robbery.

David Kelly, 30, and an accomplice snatched £6,000 during a raid on an estate agents, UK tabloid the Sun reports.

His partner in crime menaced staff with what he claimed was a shotgun, but which was clearly a hammer. The pair then made good their escape - in Kelly's own car which was quickly traced. Just to be certain of having his collar felt, Kelly dropped his mobile - complete with family snaps - during the getaway.

Detective Malcolm Hustler noted: “There’s a TV show called America’s Dumbest Criminals. If there was a British version there is no doubt Kelly would be in it.” ®
