HP to SMB storage market: 'Yoo-hoo! tee-hee!'

Hopes more disk = more love

Hewlett-Packard has a major crush on the small and medium-sized business market and has announced a new model in its All-in-One Storage line and shuffled some executives to help prove it.

HP's latest move in the affair is the addition of the HP StorageWorks 1200. The 2U system is the densest chassis offered in the StorageWorks line with 12 drive bays holding up to 9TBs of SATA drives or 3.6TBs of SAS drives. The box starts at $8,759 for 3TB and runs on Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2.

The new data storage system joins StorageWorks AIO400 and 600, which have 1TB and 1.5TBs capacity respectively and debuted at around $5,000.

HP has upgraded the All-in-One Storage Manager by including a DAS to NAS migration wizard for Microsoft Exchange 2007. iSCSI storage provisioning for 64-bit Windows Server 2003 is now supported.

The StorageWorks line competes against the likes of NetApp's StoreVault S500 and EMC's Insignia storage products.

HP isn't alone in its bout of small- to mid-sized puppy-love. In recent weeks, IBM, NetApp and EMC have joined HP in coyly courting maid SMB. A come-hither server event here, a flirty box there... It's spring after all.

In the executive shuffle, Urs Renggli has been crowned "director of worldwide small and medium-sized business activities within HP's Technology Solutions Group" (his business card must be a bi-fold). Harry Baeverstad is HP's new director of SMB in the StorageWorks business unit.®
