Intel will launch its fastest mainstream mobile microprocessor on 2 September and tweak the prices of some of its existing Core 2 Duo and line-up. The same day will see Celeron M prices cut too as the new 550 debuts.

Intel documents seen by Register Hardware show the T7800 will replace the current T7700 as the top-of-the-line laptop-friendly Core 2 Duo. The new chip will be clocked at 2.6GHz and operate over an 800MHz frontside bus. It has 4MB of L2 cache.

It will be accompanied by the 2GHz T7250. Intel already has a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, the T7200, but it runs on a 667MHz FSB - the T7250 bumps that clock frequency up to 800MHz. However, it has 2MB of cache to its predecessor's 4MB.

The arrival of the T7800 will see the prices of the T7700 and the T7500 cut. They currently cost, respectively, $530 and $316 when sold in batches of 1000 CPUs. They'll most likely fall to $316 and $241, with the T7300 and T7100 remaining at $241 and $209 - there's no indication their prices will fall - or be culled from Intel's CPU list.

The arrival of the T7800 and the price cuts was forecast back in June this year. However, then it was anticipated that Intel would also release a 2.8GHz T7900, but of that there's currently no sign.

On the same day, Intel will introduce the 2.0GHz Celeron M 550 and cut the prices of the current line up, which today is topped by the 1.86GHz 540. It's priced at $134, which will be cut on 2 September, most likely to $107. Likewise, the 1.73GHz 530 will fall to $86, the same price as the 1.6GHz 520.
