... following past trends it's going to be like this:

On acquisition:

"We'll maintain the strong brand that Yahoo! has to offer"

3 months later, some Y! specific features start popping up on MSLive

6 months later:

"The Yahoo! brand doesn't really fit the strategy Microsoft Live is pursuing"

More Y! features get bastardized into Live

9 months to 1 year later:

"We've decided to discontinue the Yahoo! brand because it offers no significantly increased value over our Live! brand"

Final features get hacked into Live, the Y! domain gets redirected - extend, embrace, exterminate ....

I can see dark-colored helicopters approac...

Somebody on the train the other day was talking loudly about this, only their information was way out of date [from Metro, probably] ... and I thought "G*d! Just Drop! The! Mahoo!" (then wallowed privately in my sudden sense of feeling old).

Nice to see it as an option :)

In order to understand this Microsoft/Yahoo thing I think one schould look at the state "off balls" within Microsoft.

Bill is gone, he newer become the "great innovator" in IT. Well there was this "Newton" or something. Something about inventing the computer or something like that.

Bill has a bright future of becoming the number god sellsman for Windows bundling Windows with his fundation for bundling Windows with that fundation.

A sort of swapp this for that and lets all be merry.

Ballmer. however, has a problem, the balls are there, king size, I bet, perhaps.

But then there is that problem with all those billions of dollars under the madrass attracting the attention of shareholders who have been looking at the "figures" and rightly, demand some of that as a compensation for the hardship of beeing a Microsoft shareholder.

So, dear Ballmer, has to do something. I am sure he has not got the faintest idea about what to do with Yahoo. But then, what are the alternatives, really.

And having signed the biggest IT deal in the history of IT is really something for the Ballmers.

Microsoft / Yachoo, best version so far is Yahvool.

(or something close, check theinquirer.net)

Well...

I had a friend that worked at Daimler-Chrysler when they were a combined company and she said the running joke was to ask one of the Germans how to pronounce the company's new name.

i think it's kinda catchy, but it might be a bit too descriptive, the trademarks registry won't allow it.

How about ... MOO!

Posted Friday 15th February 2008 11:18 GMT

Happy

Points For

1. It constitutes a valid condensate of the parent companies names.

2. Brevity.

3. Easy to pronounce in any language. Universally recognisable.

4. Humourous. Saying "I'm from MOO!" wearing a suit and tie would banish all thoughts of evil money grabbing corporations from the prospective's mind.

5. Fits recommendations from "The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding," by Al Ries and Laura Ries, which states that "A branding program should be designed to differentiate your cow from all of the other cattle on the range."

That exclamation mark is a killer application.

Against

1. Business types like something enigmatic, long, difficult to translate, arid and pretentious.

You can close the gates on the voting ... I believe MOO! fits the bill nicely.

Surely Live will be in the name, being the current trendy word at Redmond?

It's like the days when everything had to be ActiveX or have Active in there somewhere.

Re: Apple -

The OS works because the hardware is fixed, the software is Linux based, and you pay a huge premium for its development through the hardware. When you consider just what MS have to support, it's a miracle anything works at all (and I know Linux supports a lot of hardware, but just try running Linux on any modern PC laptop and get all the components to work without resorting to recompiling the kernel or contacting a spotty Russian teenager for a fix to his driver!).
