WTF is a Laptot

Posted Wednesday 20th August 2008 06:37 GMT

Alert

I googled it incase i am missing something but all i got was this

Laptots were African colonial troops in the service of France between 1750 and the early ... Senegalese laptots in Central Africa with French officer, 1890

Its from wikki so its probably wrong

What's a laptot?

Laptot doesn't sound particularly appealing.. regardless of the CPU used. Sounds like a toy doll that would just cry and urinate all over you, why does Intel think people would want this?

now there's a name you just have to love...

Missing the point

Posted Wednesday 20th August 2008 08:22 GMT

Personally I want something just fast enough to do the job. Give me lower and lower and lower power requirements over faster and faster and faster chips any time.

laptot = uttra portable sub notebook

Thumb Up

If so I think it's a pretty clever name and shame all you haters.

Exactly right... I'll almost always trade speed for battery life. How fast does it have to be, anyway? If you can decompress and display a film in real time, that's all that's needed for the majority of tiny portables.

Of course not. It's a typo. I'm just not going to fix it because that isn't what I do all day long when I'm not comment-wrangling.

Tsk.

AC1> "Give me lower and lower and lower power requirements over faster and faster and faster chips any time."

I'd settle for something that doesn't run so hot for my next choice (not surprised, or complaining, honest - my EeePC[701] has already proven useful at work when I'd only brought it in to keep myself amused on the train). This sounds promising.

[@Ed: WTF indeed. Did you not think to follow the search results that led back to El Reg for an appropriate explanation??!]

@Laptot = computer for children?

No ... laptots are small computers that use laptotty in their advertising

@laptot = ultra portable sub notebook

Laptot, get it, that's a good name for those ultra, small, or small cheap computer laptop style device thingies.

Kudos to elReg for thinking up such a neat word.

anyway, it's better than "Small Cheap Computers" which is a crap name and kinda too vague as well, a desktop could be "small" and "cheap"?

here's a leedle collection of (mostly reg!) stories about the little bloighters!

cheers,

bill ;)

Sometimes I think Intel is going to quantity not quality

So does anyone think Intel hasn't really bumped performance over the last year but is simply inundating the market with so many chips people will think, "They must be designing better stuff then AMD, in the last 6 months they've released 3 generations of CPUs!"
