Indonesia flips over internet rock star smut clips

Naughty vid precipitates deletion/restriction frenzy

An online celebrity sex video is giving Indonesia's authorities an opportunity to try and restrict internet use.

Two explicit web clips showing Jakarta rock star Ariel in action with two models/television presenters has upset yet proved strangely enticing to the population, which is mainly Muslim.

Several schools have been raided for mobile phones so the offending clips could be removed.

The stars involved could face a lengthy jail sentence if convicted under an anti-porn law passed in 2008.

One of the clips shows Ariel (real name Nazril Irham) in bed with his girlfriend Luna Maya, who following the scandal has lost her job as the face of Lux beauty soap.

Meanwhile Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring, from the Muslim-based Prosperous Justice Party, is using the issue to revive his plans to block Web access to morally suspect sites. An earlier plan was blocked by heavy opposition.

He has told reporters: "We want to minimise the negative impact from the Internet as it will destroy this nation."

Sembiring wants teams to immediately set out and deploy firewalls for more than 2,000 internet cafes around the country. He's said it was a "race against time" to protect children from harm. ®
