ExaGrid stuffs dedupe boost into hot new box

Thirty per cent better performance

ExaGrid has boosted its deduplication performance by 30 per cent with a new box.

The EX13000E follows on from the 10TB capacity EX10000E and holds up to 13TB of data. In ExaGrid's 10-node, globally deduplicating grid configuration the maximum capacity is now 130TB – up from 100TB.

ExaGrid says this about its single-node performance of 2.4TB/hour ingest speed: "The fastest system per TB ... The highest performance 13TB appliance in the industry ... up to double the backup performance per TB of any other disk backup with a deduplication system."

Here are some comparable performance statistics:

  • ExaGrid EX1300E (post-process deduplication) – Appliance – 2.4TB/hour – 10-node grid – 24TB/hour
  • Data Domain DD890 (in-line deduplication) – Single array – 14.7TB/hour (with Boost) – 2-node cluster – 26.3TB/hour
  • Sepaton S2100-ES2 (post-process) – Single node – 5.4TB/hour – 8-node grid – 43.2TB/hour

The EX13000E is not the fastest deduplicating box in the industry by any means, but ExaGrid says: "The cost of the new EX13000E is 25-30 per cent less than comparable competitive systems," with the devil in that detail being the word "comparable". The company has a tape library price-matching programme in which it will match the quoted price of a new tape library "in the vast majority of situations" with an ExaGrid reduplicating disk backup system configured to handle the same size backups.

The EX13000E can fit straight away into existing ExaGrid grid set-ups, immediately boosting customers' scalability headroom, and the company is riding the Intel processor curve as close behind Intel as it can. The list price for the EX13000E is $69,900 and it is currently available. ®
