Poskett signs up to lead Huawei UK enterprise channel

Enter(prise) the Dragon

Former long-serving HP reseller and distie boss Dave Poskett is heading up the UK enterprise channel for Chinese network infrastructure vendor Huawei.

Poskett left HP at the start of 2010 after it effectively disbanded the over-arching Solution Partner Organisation by creating specific channel teams in each of its business units. He then moved to Cisco as IBM account director.

But the industry old-timer's LinkedIn status now states that he has joined the Chinese firm as enterprise channel director for the UK and Ireland.

The enterprise portfolio Huawei is flogging includes routing, switching, IP telephony, call centre tech, telepresence, video telephony, servers and storage, smartphones, and tablets.

Poskett's appointment follows on from the July addition to the UK and Ireland organisation of former Sun UK boss and Oracle hardware sales director Simon Culmer as veep for enterprise.

On 5 September, Huawei UK CEO Victor Zhang said in a statement that Culmer's employment was a "statement for our ambition to become a serious player in the enterprise field".

Given the time lapse between the appointment of Culmer and the public confirmation of his role, it may take another quarter before Huawei acknowledges Poskett's position as channel head.

As Huawei boosts its salesforce in Europe, Cisco CEO John Chambers was quoted in Market Watch as saying his firm was planning on taking on the rival on its home turf, stating that he would not let the Huawei make "all the profit" in China "then go against you with no profits in the rest of the world".

“Huawei is going to be a very tough long-term competitor,” said Chambers.

Keith Humphreys, managing consultant at market watcher euroLAN, said Huawei will be a force to be reckoned with in Europe.

"Cisco and Juniper would be stupid not to take them seriously; they have a manufacturing cost base that is unrivalled," he told El Reg.

Poskett and Culmer were unavailable to comment. ®
