LG touts tellies with cloud-gaming capabilities
While OnLive gets into GoogleTV
CES 2012
LG is to build the Gaikai cloud gaming platform into future LG smart TVs.
All LG Cinema 3D TVs launched in 2012 will support Gaikai, a service the manufacturer claims runs on a "much more powerful hardware in the cloud than today's PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360" consoles. LG's TVs need no additional hardware and will run the service directly through their smart TV UI.
Gaikai's main rival, OnLive, this week announced a similar deal with Google. OnLive's cloud gaming service will be integrated into Google TV.
In 2010, Panasonic struck a deal with Ubisoft to bring specially developed titles to its IPTV platform, VieraCast.
As more and more manufacturers adopt a similar approach, it's hard to ignore the possibility that the dawn of the traditional consoles' demise is indeed upon us. ®
