Santander's banking website craps out

Did it melt in Blighty's soaring temperatures?

Santander's banking website has been up and down today like a demented frog, forcing punters to hotfoot it to bricks-and-mortar branches.

Customers took to Twitter and El Reg's inbox to report being booted off the online service shortly after logging into their accounts. Other complaints suggest that the online banking service has been dicky since yesterday evening.

Sue Lawrence, a science lesson technician living in Northampton, reported at 7pm on Monday:

have @santander actually got the hang of online banking! first day of holiday going to be spent ina bloody bank sorting it out!!

University of Edinburgh computer science undergraduate Andrew Johnston suffered a frustrating experience with the bank:

Santander Online Banking absolutely horrible this morning - anything that ISN'T producing an error is taking about 2 minutes to load.

And fellow tweeter Benjamin Powell added:

aaaarrgggh @Santander online banking unavailable. Maintenance should be done at night! #commonsense

Santander claims the issue has been resolved, but did not explain why the outage occurred. The bank said in a statement:

We are aware that an isolated group of personal banking customers had intermittent problems accessing Online Banking for a short time earlier today. We are sorry for any inconvenience this caused and we can confirm that this has been resolved.

As for what caused the cock-up, feel free to send your answers on a postcard. ®
