McAfee ‘not a suspect’: CNN report

Belize police still keen to talk to him

The story of John McAfee’s pursuit in Belize has taken an odd turn: a police spokesperson has told CNN that the anti-virus pioneer is “not a suspect” in the investigation surrounding the murder of his neighbour.

This CNN report states that McAfee is still being sought for questioning. Wired has reported that he buried himself under sand, using a cardboard box to make sure he could still breathe, while police searched his property last Sunday.

CNN quotes a spokesman for the National Police in Belize, Raphael Martinez, as saying that McAfee is not a suspect but a person of interest sought “to clarify the situation, to allay the fears of everybody that perhaps he is indeed involved in the murder of his neighbour” (George Faull, with whom McAfee had a dispute).

“He needs to come in so that we can clear the air. We are law-abiding people here. We follow the laws to the letter. We believe at this point that he has absolutely no fear of being killed by anybody,” CNN quotes Martinez as saying.

Three unnamed people have been detained in the investigation, CNN says, with the police describing the detentions as “routine”. ®
