Steve Jobs' death clears way for '13-inch' JUMBO iPAD HYPEGASM

Would late biz baron have tolerated so many iThings at once?

Apple is testing larger screens for next-gen iPhones and iPads, according to whispers from hardware suppliers in Asia.

The fruity firm has ordered some slightly larger iPhone displays, measuring more than four inches, and some supersize iPad screens at least 13 inches diagonally, the Wall Street Journal reports. The current iPhone 5's display is four inches, while iPads are just 9.7 inches and iPad Minis are 7.9 inches.

Taking the size of iDevices up a few notches would move Apple into the phablet territory dominated by arch-rival Samsung with its Android mobes. However, it's unclear if the firm is married to the idea of bigger screen real estate or whether it may have some other differentiations it's testing for the next generation of iGear.

Apple, particularly under late chief Steve Jobs, has resisted the idea of having a wide variety of products out on sale at the same time. In contrast, Samsung has flooded the market with Galaxy phones and tablets of all shapes and sizes, as well as cheaper models of Android phones, allowing it to take the lead in the smartphone market.

Suppliers have said that they're preparing to ramp up production of a new iPad later this month, and that components for a new iPhone started popping off assembly lines last month. Rumours suggest the next Jesus mobe will come out in the second half of this year. ®
