London plod plonks, er, pull request on EasyDNS

Square Mile squad wants redirection to 'gotcha' page

Hosting outfit EasyDNS has gone public with a takedown request issued not by a court, but from the City of London Police.

The domain being targeted by the plods is Torrentpond.com, which is registered in Singapore and whose address, 91.213.8.186, is in a block belonging to Hosting Solutions in the Commonwealth of Dominica. EasyDNS says the request included:

  • Suspension of the domain;
  • Locking of the domain records to prevent alteration; and
  • Redirection of the DNS to a London Police domain, 83.138.166.114.

EasyDNS says in its blog post it decided to go public because the City of London Police, whose usual remit is financial crime affecting the Square Mile, threatened to report it to ICANN over the order, in this document.

The ICANN threat seems to be a hint that the police would try to have EasyDNS's registrar status revoked.

The company says the police also requested that the domain be suspended on the basis of inaccurate DNS data, even though Mark Jeftovic, author of the blog, notes that there is a separate ICANN process for complaining about inaccurate DNS records.

Jeftovic also complained that the domain to which the police demand the "offending" site be redirected is supported by and has prominent links to entertainment industry sites.

“If I can't make various governments and law enforcement agencies get warrants or court orders before they crack my private communications then I can at least require a court order before I take down my own customer,” Jestovic wrote. ®
