Dell slaps Intel Haswell brawn in monster Precision workstations

Screw mobile, bring on the big iron

Dell has updated its line of tower and rack workstations with the latest Intel x86-64 chips and promises they will be on sale next month.

Powering Dell's new offerings are "Haswell" Xeon E5 v3 processors, which aren’t on general release as yet, and the Precision models will also carry DDR4 memory capable of speeds up to 2,133MHz. Thunderbolt connectors are also built in for faster data transfer and they can be specced up with a variety of graphics options.

“By offering Dell Precision Workstation customers the choice to accelerate their workflows with new AMD FirePro W2100, W4100, W5100 and W7100 graphics cards, Dell underscores its commitment to enable customers with powerful, reliable workstations that deliver improved performance over previous generation systems,” said David Cummings, general manager of professional graphics at AMD, in a canned statement.

The new models include a single socket Tower 5810 and high-power dual processor Tower 7810 system and a top of the range Tower 7910 workstation. All are designed for easy servicing and upgradability with quick release hard drives and a lockable chassis to deter light-fingered staff.

For those that like their workstations virtual, Dell will also be shipping the Precision Rack 7910, which has the capabilities of the Tower system, but in a 2U rack form factor. The rack systems support Citrix XenServer and VMware's ESX hypervisor family, and includes an Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller for data center managers to use.

Full pricing data has not been released for the new systems. ®
