Hortonworks to gobble Budapest-based SequenceIQ

Rapid deployment tool for Hadoop clusters here we come

Hortonworks decided it needed an automated tool to launch Hadoop clusters in the cloud, or any environment supporting Docker containers, and one buy of SequenceIQ later, ’tis done.

The loss-making slinger of enterprise Apache Hadoop is to consume the Budapest-based open source developer of rapid deployment tools, for an undisclosed sum.

The buy isn’t expected to close until the end of calendar Q2 at which point Hortonworks will begin rolling SequenceIQ’s wares into its Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) and shift the tech into the Apache Software Foundation.

The rationale for the deal, according to the buyer, is to let punters “simplify and better control” deployment of Hadoop clusters, whether it be in Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform or Open Stack.

The tools let biz users “automate the launching of Hadoop clusters on any cloud infrastructure platform across the entire lifecycle, from proof-of-concept to development, test and production,” said Rob Bearden, CEO at Hortonworks.

At only around 14-months old, SequenceIQ has also written CloudBreak, an “elastic and cloud agnostic” deployment tool for HDP clusters, and Periscope — policy-based autoscaling for multi-tenant HDP clusters.

This is the second acquisition by Hortonworks, which last May consumed another bite-sized nibble in the shape of XA Secure, a business that was formed in the previous year.

Hortonworks, which listed last year well short of its anticipated valuation, reported net losses of $90m for the three months to 31 December on total revenues of $12.7m. ®
