Apple slings bug-fixed iOS 9.0.1 at fanbois, PIN bypass hole still open

Slide to update … for real this time

Apple has released an update to address several bugs spotted in its iOS 9 mobile operating system.

iOS version 9.0.1 aims to fix, among other things, an installation problem that stopped fans from upgrading from iOS 7: their devices froze on the "slide to upgrade" screen.

Other fixes in the update correct a problem that was causing some APN (access point name) users to drop cellular data connections. Apple also patched an image distortion issue with Safari and a clock problem that was causing some alarm and timer alerts to not activate.

Not addressed in the update was a recently discovered loophole in the iOS login screen that could allow an attacker to bypass the PIN entry and, with a little help from Siri, scope out the owner's contact list and photos. Apple has yet to issue any comment on the bug.

The patch comes just one week after Apple posted the general release of iOS 9 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, and just one day before Apple is set to deliver the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus handsets, with the exception of some parts of New York, where parcel deliveries are being delayed thanks to Pope Francis.

Users can install iOS 9 by tapping on Settings, then General, then Software Update. The latest version of iOS carries the same requirements as iOS 8, so any device running the last version of iOS will be able to install iOS 9.

Given the number of security holes patched in iOS 9, it makes good sense to install the update on all capable iOS devices. ®
