Models wearing computers strut the catwalk

London premiere for Brave New Unwired World Collection

Technology took to the catwalk this morning as models strutted their stuff wearing the latest gizmos fashioned by the very best in design.

The London premiere of the Brave New Unwired World from Los Angeles-based Charmed Technology fused fashion and IT in one seamless display of Net chic.

Every part of the body was either wired up or connected to a piece of hardware - on fingers, wrists, heads, arms.

Apart from the fact that most of the models were dressed in outfits more at home on the moonscape set of Space 1999, the show proved a crowd-pleaser.

One of the items - a "communicator" - looked like a piece of hosepipe coiled around one poor girl's neck.

At one point the model wearing the Asthmist - a conceptual design backpack releasing a fine mist for asthma sufferers -looked as if she'd need to call in the fire brigade to put out her smoking rucksack.

Another item (we'd probably call it a string vest) was described as a "true smart second skin".

The most intriguing item had to be the oxymoronic necklace which allows the user to dictate e-mail messages silently.

According to the show's organizers, a third of the items on display are available to buy today - and a good deal more will become available within the next year or so.
