Anarchist hacker voted onto ICANN board
And a grumpy libertarian
The controversial elections for five ICANN board directors have ended and the results are in. The five represent different continents and were decided by the public, who logged onto ICANN's site and made their selection. The results are:
Africa: Nii Quaynor
Asia/Australia/Pacific: Masanobu Katoh
Europe: Andy Mueller-Maguhn
Latin America/Caribbean: Ivan Moura Campos
North America: Karl Auerbach
Interestingly, all regions apart from North America were decisively won, with the eventual winner receiving more than double the votes of his nearest rival. Another intriguing aspect was the total number of votes for each region. Asia/Australia/Pacific led with a healthy 17,745 votes, followed by Europe with 11,309. Then, just 3,449 voted for the North American region. Latin America/Cariibbean polled 1,402 votes and lastly Africa mustered just 130 votes.
The North American contest went through six rounds for some reason, with the lowest knocked out in each round. Eventually grumpy libertarian Auerbach won with 1,738 votes to Simons' 1,581. The next closest result saw anarchist hacker Andy Mueller-Maguhn win with 5,948 votes - 3,653 ahead of his nearest rival.
