IXOS wants to tidy your inbox

A new sysadmin tool for BOFH to abuse

A nifty little piece of software from IXOS comes out today that will archive any files attached to your emails, thus keeping your inbox compliant with the principles of Feng Shui, ie uncluttered.

Designed to work on a company's LAN, this can work manually or automatically and is designed for Outlook or Lotus mail programs.

So why is this any better than just deleting emails on a regular basis? Well, for a start you won't delete the wrong things says IXOS. Also, not all documents can be deleted, some things do need to be kept for legal reasons.

The archiving can be done by a user on demand, or can be set by a sys admin to work automaticall. We are sure BOFH is rubbing his hands with glee at the prospect of a new tool to play with.

It shunts these attachments over to a dedicated archive server, where they are still accessible, but just don't slow down an individual's machine. The attachment is the stored in the IXOS Email Archive, and the envelope icon next to the message changes to a picture of a CD.

The system has been designed to work with as many as 100,000 users, but IXOS says it has started doing installs for as little as 150 networked people. Currently the company's largest deal is with Bosch, for a user base of 90,000.

Prices start at around £50 per user, but the more users you have the cheaper it gets; the cost falls to around £19 per user at the largest end of the scale. ®
