Secret Intel price cuts revealed

True Lies?

When we asked an Intel Europe spokesperson about price changes earlier this week, we were officially told that only three processors were affected. (see Intel price cuts: not many told).

This was in direct contravention of reports on two German web sites which listed far more wide-ranging cuts. Intel officially denied that any other parts were affected.

Imagine then our surprise to receive a copy of an Intel document which suggests that the German sites were correct and that Intel was being somewhat economical with the truth.

When we asked Intel to comment, the official response was: "We cannot comment on information not in the public domain."

Judge for yourselves where the truth lies.

Here is that (alleged) Intel document in full:

"Effective October 29, Intel is providing updated pricing for select microprocessors designed for PCs and servers. The adjustments to the prices of Intel's microprocessors support Intel's commitment to providing increased performance into the desktop, mobile, and server market segments at higher volume price points.

"The percentage decline of Intel's published 1000-unit processor price is listed below, along with the new boxed processor Intel Channel Rebate (ICR, previously MIP). This percentage of price decline is similar to the price decline for Intel boxed processors sold to authorized distributors.

"Intel Product Dealers should expect to see similar percentage declines in their quoted boxed processor prices from authorized distributors. The new price and ICR are effective as of October 29, 2000. Please contact your authorized Intel distributor after October 29 for specific pricing and availability details.
