GameBoy outsells PlayStation 2

Japanese gamers turn to portable systems

Japan's love affair with the PlayStation 2 is officially over. Sony's console has at long last been knocked off the top of the games machine chart, and is now at number three.

The new leader? Nintendo's GameBoy Color. However, Sony has one consolation: its re-engineered PlayStation, the PS One, took the number two slot. And its SCPH-4000 machine is number five. Nintendo's N64 took fourth place.

The chart, compiled weekly by Japan's Nikkei news agency, is based on sales from 3200 major Japanese retailers.

Nikkei's figures showed the PlayStation 2 leading the pack for the last 28 consecutive weeks - since the second week of May in point of fact. At that point, the PlayStation 2 took the lead back from the GameBoy Color. Nintendo's machine had eclipsed the next-generation console's sales for a week at the beginning of May. The PlayStation 2 had dominated the market since its launch the previous March. ®
