Chipmongers vie for chip of the year crown

It's a meat market, I tell you

Chipmakers are readying their tuxedos for January's big event - the announcement of the winners of Microprocessor Report's Analyst's Choice Awards.

Awards are given in eight categories and are aimed at recognising excellence in semiconductor innovation, design, and implementation. To be selected for the shortlist, the product must 'represent significant technical innovation'.

Intel will no doubt be sulking from the omission of the Pentium III and Celeron from the 'Best PC Processor' category, which comprises the AMD Athlon and Duron, IBM's PowerPC 750CX, and the Pentium 4.

In the Best Server/Workstation Processor category, we find the IBM S/390, Intel Itanium and Pentium III Xeon and Sun's UltraSPARC III.

The mobile shortlist reads as follows: Cyrix III with LongHaul, Intel Mobile Pentium w/SpeedStep, AMD K6-2+ with PowerNow and Transmeta's Crusoe.

Other categories include Best DSP, Best Embedded Processor, Best Highly Integrated Processor, Best Network Processor and Best Media Processor.

The awards ceremony is due to be held on 18 January 18. ®
