Sony cuts PS2 sales forecast by 10%

A million less Japanese expected to buy one

Sony has chopped 10 per cent off its PlayStation 2 worldwide sales forecast for 2001.

The Japanese vendor said it now expects to ship nine million of the consoles during its current financial year, which ends in March. The company previously said it would ship ten million.

Europe's allocation remains unchanged, with three million consoles, Japan's figure is three million - down one million, and North America three million.

Sony said it had shipped 6.4 million PlayStation 2s worldwide so far this year, with 2.88 million in the third quarter.

Software shipments are also expected to fall short of forecasts, largely due to delays in release dates of key titles such as Gran Turismo 3. The announcement came yesterday as Sony recorded profit down 22.8 per cent to 72.2 billion yen ($612 million) for the third quarter, and warned its operating loss for the year would likely be higher than expected. ®
