Woundup Win95 dying, Gates is Napoleon?
And time to stuff some more ballots...
As you heard in the Woundup first - ZDNet reports Dell has ceased support for Windows 95, due to the expiration of the OEM licence that covered 95. Microsoft's new-look licence for the PC companies doesn't cover 95, so as the various outfits' deals get renegotiated, 95 will go into near total eclipse.
Microsoft is also stopping selling bulk 95 licenses to medium-sized to large business, so the writing's on the wall.
Stu Browlerwell sent in an interesting link from the blunt BBC, which compares Bill Gates and Napoleon (we can do better -ed)
. It seems Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson had some comments to say for a book written on the Microsoft vs. US case. The article quotes Jackson, saying that Gates suffers from "a Napoleonic concept of himself and his company, an arrogance that derives from power and unalloyed success". Throughout the article, both Gates and Napoleon are head to head, but it seems Napoleon was closer to taking over the world for some reason.
Hitting the new security features in Whistler topic, several readers brought up an obvious question: what if a user buys Whistler but does not have an Internet connection and/or a modem? Well, if the person does not have an Internet connection, but does have a modem, Microsoft will most likely have an MSN sign-up application to get you started on the Internet. And if worst comes to worst and the person does not have a modem, then I don't think the user should upgrade to Whistler. Look at it this way: if someone these days does not have an Internet connection, but wants to have the most up to date version of Microsoft Windows, they shouldn't even bother surpassing Windows 95.
To finish, I'd like to ask you guys for a favor. Recently, I asked many Register readers to go vote for us as Site of the Year at Window Planet, well PC STATS has brought up its yearly Tech Links - Top 100. We're currently in 39th place, and need to at least double our votes to take us to the top, so start voting! Also, it seems somebody already cheated and they're doing a recount (I'm trying to remember where we saw this?), so right now it's more of a popularity contest than a ranking contest, like it was before.
