AMD follows Intel with 5 March price cuts
Across the board reductions
AMD will cut its Athlon and Duron prices across the board next month - on the day after Intel's next major round of price cuts.
Chipzilla is cutting prices on 4 March. Chimpzilla's cuts come in on the fifth.
That's the plan, at least, and what the company has been telling its resale channel and, we presume, its OEMs. It's being suitably cautious about it, of course - probably because it's still closely watching what it's arch-rival is going to do.
As a company email puts it: "This is merely a warning. AMD has not yet committed to this date and can at anytime move it to an earlier or later date. During the next two weeks please do not stock your processor inventory at high levels."
In other words, don't buy too many processors just yet, because big things are afoot. And, yes, a price cut is in the offing. As the email says: "I urge you to take advantage of the new low pricing once the price drop occurs." [our italics]
We'd like to think all this price cutting action is paving the way for the introduction of the 1.3GHz Athlon, source of so much excitement this week. Register readers report that UK reseller Dabs Direct is now taking orders for via its Web site, having previously advertised the chip in the pages of PC Pro. ®
