New Palm ‘imminent’ – next week, in fact

m105 - the m100's big brother - out on 6 March

Updated Palm is set to announce a new handheld, a more powerful version of its entry-level m100 model, destined to replace the IIIxe.

And we've just heard from Register readers that UK computer supplier Misco has the new machine in its latest catalogue. We haven't seen it ourselves, but the catalogue apparently claims the device will be out on 6 March. The details are on page 15, we're told.

Reports suggest that the new Palm, dubbed m105, will have 8MB of memory, as opposed to just 2MB. It is expected to have a cradle to synchronise with a PC rather than a cable connector.

According to a report on CNet, the launch of the new machine is imminent, and although Palm would not confirm this, it would say that it has stopped production of the IIIxe.

It is still available on the high street and it will not be recalled, but production has stopped and the model is no longer available from Palm's website.

The new handheld is expected to cost $200, compared to the $149 for the current model. Like the m100, the operating system will not be upgradeable. ®
