Taiwan mobo makers in February salesfest

Record revenues expected

Taiwan's motherboard makers should be celebrating this month after a bumper stack of orders.

The country's biggest mobo manufacturers, Asustek Computer and Elitegroup Computer Systems, expect to post record sales for February - more than NT$7.6 billion and NT$2 billion respectively, Taiwan's Commercial Times reports.

This compared to NT$7.6 billion for Asustek in October 2000 - a record for the company at the time, and NT$1.98 for Elitegroup.

Asustek forecast it shipped 1.4 million motherboards last month (up more than 20 per cent on February 2000) and 35,000 notebooks.

The figures are better than expected, and the industry as a whole is also predicting sunny sales for March thanks to growing overseas interest. One Asustek source told the Commercial Times it was gearing up for record revenue in March.

Elitegroup was also optimistic - it forecast sales would keep growing for the year, and hinted that revenue was on the up in Europe and Latin America. ®
