We get Athlon's Foot, trudging round

HWRoundup All the hardware sites have been waiting for AMD to press the RELEASE button on the 1.3 and 1.33GHz Afflon non disclosure agreements (NDAs). So here's a roundup of sites that have reviewed the parts.

AMD Zone. With a name like AMD Zone, which has stuck with Chimpzilla almost from the off, you'd expect a good review. Chris Tom gives it one.

And cos he's an AMD Afflon fan (not that kind, dolt!), he's also spared us the effort of wibbling independently to the usual suspects and given quite a long list of other sites that have reviews. Below, we take a look at some of their conclusions...

Ace's Hardware describes the chip as a 1.5GHz processor in disguise. Johan De Gelas once again points out that if apps are optimised for Intel's Screaming Sindy II and the Pentium 4, that is to say with modern compilers, they run like the clappers. How will this processor, for example, compare with the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 coming next month? Rather than get into this sort of thing, Johan looks at the overclocking potentialities of the 1.33GHz chip. He concludes it's a speed demon but demands high speed memory. The Athlon 1300 with a 13X multiplier is relatively slow compared to the 266MHz FSB jobbie.

Tom's Hardware says the Athlon intros "leave Intel's Pentium 4 1.5GHz behind and earns AMD the performance crown once again". AMD has struck first, he said. The chips, of course, are cheaper too.
