4C Entity partners with The Reg for copy protection alliance

Who says you can't make money from the Internet?

The 4C Entity, responsible for the DVD CSS and CPRM technologies, announced today that The Register is to be the first publisher to enter into a wide-ranging content sharing and co-operative agreement.

The Register will act as a proving ground for existing copyright protection schemes and as a test bed for future technologies.

The alliance includes reciprocal exchange of personnel. License Management International(LMI) executive John Hoy will take over The Register's Letter's Section, and write a weekly column: 'Why Copyright Protection Is Good For You'.

In exchange, Reg odd job man Lester Haines will work on merchandise and marketing projects for the 4C Entity. A range of t-shirts is already underway, due for delivery in 2007, including the slogans 'Show Us Your Keys' and 'Do You Know Who's Picking Whose Keys (We Do)'.

Future technology co-operation includes: work on the SYFP (Seize Your Fingers Protocol), planned for inclusion in copy-protected keyboards which immobilise the user when copy control mechanisms are breached. 4C explains that this is a humane technology, involving temporary loss of use of the fingertips only. ®
