Yahoo! charges! for! email! by! phone!

Will? it? replace? porn? revenues?

Reformed pornmonger Yahoo! is to start charging for its service that lets users access their emails by phone.

The Internet portal plans to end the freebie Yahoo! by Phone service on May 7. According to the company's site, users will have to register and pay "a low monthly subscription fee". The company doesn't plan to reveal pricing until six days before the charges kick in.

The site advises existing customers of Yahoo! by Phone, which enables registered users to dial into a free phone number and listen to a computerised voice read their email, or get stock or weather news, to register by May 7 if they don't want their service interrupted.

Current users who do not want to pay for the service will be able to access the voicemail part of their account until June 7.

Yahoo! previously warned surfers to expect more fee-based services - its main revenue stream comes from online advertising, which has been hit hard in the current dotcom downturn.

In addition, the company has announced plans to abandon some of its online advertisers. Last week the dotcom bowed to public pressure and said it would stop sticking banner ads from hard core Websites on its site. ®
