Nvidia takes control of workstation graphics biz
Snapping at ATI's heels
Nvidia is the world's leading graphics chip maker... almost.
In fact, the Gartner Dataquest survey that Nvidia cites put the graphics company at the top of the totem pole covered just the workstation market sector.
So, while Nvidia is market leader here and dominates the mainstream desktop graphics arena, too, arch-rival ATI's huge lead in the mobile space appears to be keeping it ahead of Nvidia overall.
Still, Nvidia's success in the workstation arena is a major step in its attempt to be viewed as something more important than a games market player. And to wrest market leadership away from ATI. Indeed, once the 3dfx Voodoo sales start rolling in - while the company figures out what it's going to do with the brand - it might even get up to number one across the board. It's certainly a close-run thing.
According to Gartner Dataquest's numbers, Nvidia took 34 per cent of the workstation graphics arena, taking a 34.2 per cent lead of the entry-level and 32.8 per cent of the mid-range market. Nvidia's release on the matter doesn't give stats for the very top-end, so we assume it didn't come out on top. ®
