e-Fridge open for business
Rich? Bone idle? You'll love this...
UK supermarket chain Tesco e-commerce tentacle has embraced fridge maker Home Delivery Access to solve the final conundrum of internet home grocery deliveries - how to get the food from the front door to the fridge.
Recognising that busy executives and their wives simply do not have time to be moving their own consumables around the house, the alliance is offering the idle rich the last word in labour-saving white goods.
The 'shop drop' fridge has a door on the outside of the house through which deliveries can be made - even when the owner is away. Potential housebreakers are kept at bay by an airlock (which doubles as a security door), and combination lock.
Naturally, the fridge features a microchip which will send the customer an SMS message or email to confirm arrival of the order. Unhappily, it appears that houseowners will still have to walk to the fridge themselves if they fancy a lager and a frozen pizza.
Tesco sees this as the natural next step in its home delivery service, which currently processes 70,000 orders a week. Some UK housebuilders are already offering the fridge as an option in new developments.
Lamentably, it seems that deliveries will continue to be made by van - and not flying car - for the foreseeable future. ®
