Apple confirms retail store launch

Doors to open on 19 May

Updated Apple's retail chain will open its doors on Saturday 19 May - just ahead of its Worldwide Developers Forum, which kicks off on the 21st.

An Apple spokeswoman confirmed the opening, according to the Wall Street Journal yesterday.

The news leaked out after a reporter Web site PioneerPlanet received an invite to an "advance briefing and private tour" of a store in the Tysons Galleria shopping centre in McLean, Virginia.

One Register reader described it thus: "McLean is in the Washington metropolitan area. It is one of the main business and shopping centers in the DC region, and is also known for high-dollar neighborhoods."

The "tour" will take place on 15 May.

The WSJ got a confirmation of the opening from an Apple spokeswoman who said yes, the company's first retail store will open on 19 May.

Whether the McLean store is the first opening or one of a number taking place on the 19th isn't known. The only clear (ish) date for the opening of another Apple store is November for the site in a mall at Littleton, Colorado. ®
