Intel pegs 27 May for Pentium III, Celeron price cuts

Desktop, mobile reductions pave way for 0.13 micron Tualatins

Intel's price-cutting programme continues apace, with the next round of reductions due on 27 May, as we first revealed earlier this year (see Pentium 4 price blitz to push out PIII).

Last month's Pentium 4 spring sale saw Intel's previous price cuts torn up, but the strategy continues, just with new pricing targets.

The latest list of reductions has been leaked to Web site Digit Life, and it matches closely with what we already know from our own roadmaps.

So, on 27 May, Intel will cut the price of the 1GHz Pentium III to $193, down from $225. The 933MHz part will fall to $183 from $193.

The 850MHz Celeron will fall to $86 (from $138), the 800MHz part to $74 (from $93), the 766MHz to $69 (from $79) and the 733MHz to $64 (from $73).

The desktop Celeron cuts pave the way for the 900MHz version of the chip, which is due to ship early Q1 for $103.

In the mobile space, the 1GHz Mobile Pentium III's price will come down on 27 May to $637 before falling to $401 in June when Intel releases Tualatin its 0.13 micron die-shrink PIII line, as we reported here. The 900MHz Mobile PIII will fall to $423 then hit $268 when Tualatin's launched, aka T-Time.

T-Time will also see the 850MHz Mobile PIII fall to $241, and the 800MHz and 750MHz parts to $198.

Coming in just ahead of the 27 May price reductions, the 800MHz Celeron will be launched on 21 May at $134, before falling to $107 on 17 June. We're not sure why 17 June is special - could it be T-Time? - but on that day the 750MHz Mobile Celeron will fall to $91 and the 700MHz part will fall to $75.

Coming in June are 800MHz and 733MHz Celerons based on the 0.18 micron Coppermine-T core. They will be priced at $107 and $91, respectively, to match their nearest Coppermine relatives. Coppermine and Coppermine-T Mobile Celerons ship with 128KB of on-die L2 cache- Mobile PIII Coppermine and Coppermine-Ts ship with 256KB. Mobile Tualatins will have 512KB of on-die L2 cache.

Intel will release the 850MHz Mobile Celeron on 2 July at $134. ®
