VIA whips cover off Athlon 4 chipset

Doubles up as Duron part too

Updated VIA unveiled today its first chipset designed specifically for AMD's mobile Athlon 4: the long-awaited Twister K.

Officially dubbed the ProSavage KN133, the product incorporates S3's Savage 4 graphics acceleration core and VIA's KT133A North Bridge. Together, they provide 200MHz and 266MHz frontside bus speeds and support PC-100 and PC-133 SDRAM.

It also offers such mobile-oriented features as "integrated DSTN support", "integrated dual channel LVDS" and a host of other incomprehensible but appropriate (we guess) acronyms, including SMA, ACPI and JAFC*. Oh, and it supports AMD's PowerNow! power-saving technology too.

The chipset also supports AMD's new 800MHz and 850MHz Durons.

Expect kit based on the chipset to ship in the first or second month of Q3. The ProSavage KN133 itself hasn't yet entered volume production - that's expected to happen in a couple of weeks or so, said VIA/S3 Graphics marketing manager Paul Ayscough today. ®
