Google Usenetters get posting rights

"Dear Larry..."

Google continues to claw back the functionality lost when it bought out the Deja Usenet archive, and threw the UI overboard.

As from yesterday, users have the ability to post to Usenet groups. Google requires posters to have a valid email address, so "andrew@no-spam-we're-British-dot-theregister-dot-co-dot-uk" won't cut it. Users are encouraged to employ an anonymous account instead, and helpfully provides a list.

Users also have the option of preventing their messages from being archived by Google itself, as they can specify that the X-No-archive flag is set.

Google has also provided a guide to Usenetiquette. It includes plenty of valuable advice on courtesy and brevity, including the admonition to "Be Careful with Humor and Sarcasm".

Words we live by, of course. ®
