250 ADSL exchanges go tits up

Still, nice weather we're having at the moment

Almost a third of BT's ADSL-enabled exchanges went tits up yesterday leaving hundreds of users without access to the Web.

Around 250 exchanges (out of 839 exchanges)suffered the outage which occurred at around 3.00pm (BST) yesterday afternoon. Most were back up by late evening.

However, two exchanges were still flat on their backs as of today. It is not known when they'll be back on their feet.

Nor is it known how many Net users were hit by the problem but our colleagues at ADSL Guide tell us it could have been as many as 2,000 people.

It's understood that the fault stemmed from a software fault.

A spokeswoman for BT has told El Reg that while 250 exchanged were hit yesterday, not all of them were ADSL-enabled.

Last week users of BT's ADSL service in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of England were unable to use the service for 24 hours after a contractor cut through a cable in Manchester. ®
