Nvidia Q1 revenues continue upwards

Earnings would have too but for 3dfx purchase

Nvidia seems to have handsomely beaten the chip industry's downturn: last night it announced much-increased revenues and earnings for its first quarter, which ended 29 April.

So, revenues were up 62.2 per cent year-on-year and 10.4 per cent up on the previous quarter. Nvidia reported Q1 2002 sales of $240.9 million - it posted revenues of $218.2 million last quarter and $148.5 million Q1 2001.

Earnings hit $25.9 million, up over 41.5 per cent on the $18.3 million profit it declared for the same period last year. That said, the figure was down on the previous quarter, largely thanks to the company's acquisition of erstwhile arch-rival 3dfx's technology and brand assets. Take out the impact of the acquisition, and Nvidia's earnings rise to $33 million - only a little better than last quarter's $31.1 million.

With Nvidia widening its customer base in the PC OEM market, and its push into new territory, including workstation graphics, the Mac market, the chipset business, it's hard to see it being deflected from its course of rising revenues and, by and large, earnings. ATI may rule the retail market - according to the latest set of figures from US retail watcher NPD Intelect - but that hasn't helped ATI get back into the black. ®
