Corporate America prefers Compaq to Dell servers

Dell top for desktops though

US business customers are happier with Compaq than Dell servers, a survey released this week states.

Compaq regained the number one spot for customer satisfaction with Intel-based servers during the first quarter, according to a survey by Technology Business Research.

The Houston-based vendor came out top in the Corporate IT Buying Behaviour and Customer Satisfaction Study: Intel Servers, Desktops and Notebooks, followed by Dell, which had previously hogged the top position for three years. Hewlett-Packard and IBM came third and fourth, respectively.

Researchers, who quizzed more than 500 IT managers at large US corporations, found Dell was number one for desktop customer satisfaction. It was followed by Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Gateway.

Dell also took the crown for customer satisfaction with notebooks, but was followed very closely by IBM.

TBR rates vendors on a scale of one to 100, depending on factors such as ease of configuration and cost of ownership. Dell got 81.05 points for notebooks, while IBM came out with 80.40. Compaq and Toshiba also sneaked into the top four in this section. ®
