Reg readers multiply – ABCe results in
More participation than a UK election
The Register submitted its log files for the month of March, 2001 to ABCe for auditing. And here are the results.
Users 1,592,329
Visits 4,401,793
Sessions 7,256,963
We're very pleased. This makes us far and away the biggest UK IT news site.
The Register has risen without trace. In May, 1998, we converted from a fortnightly newsletter to a daily news operation. We kicked off with 300 readers a day on average. In March, 2001, we averaged more than 160,000 readers each working day.
All growth has been organic, and achieved without spending a penny on marketing. We don't even have metatags, or page imp-eating message boards, or downloads, or Java tickers, or white-label auctions or shops - just news.
And Reg readership is still growing: our internal figures for May (a month with two public holidays) show we did 17.3 million ABCe-friendly page imps.
And where do you all come from? ABCe is not so good at telling us this, but we do have a good idea, courtesy of our stats pumped out by our ad server(just under 11 per cent of our readers come from the country of Unknown).
The UK accounts for just 14.5 per cent of our readers and approximately 25 per cent of our page imps. Which makes sense, considering the UK-centric nature of much of our news.
Here's the top 10, by country.
US 48.00%
UK 14.50%
Unknown 10.81%
Canada 4.76%
Australia 2.81%
Germany 1.93%
Netherlands 1.44%
Sweden 1.21%
Japan 1.15%
France 1.13%
Denmark and Finland come in respectively at 11 and 12 with just over 0.7 per cent each. And then there is a very, very long tail.
