NTL is to offer broadband access for PCs via TV set-top boxes, the cableco has announced.

Punters in Manchester will be the first to get their hands on the technology when it rolls-out next Monday.

So far some 8,000 people in Manchester have requested the service that connects a customer's digital cable set-top box, which includes an embedded cable modem, to their personal computer - wherever it is in the home.

No additional hardware is required, says NTL.

Existing NTL cable customers will be charged £24.99 for the additional service - almost half the price of BT-based DSL offerings.

Installation costs between £17.50 and £100, depending on whether customers want to install the connection themselves, or get a techie in to do it.

NTL plans to roll out the new broadband service across in Leeds and London later this year. ®
