VIA reports bad June

Falling demand

VIA, the Taiwanese chipset-to-CPU-designer, blames falling demand for PCs for falling sales in June, its worst period for 16 months.

Sales were down just 0.1 per cent to NT$2.02 billion ($58.7 million) from June last year. And sales were down a quarter on May, which in turn was a rotten month for Taiwanese motherboard makers.

As the world's biggest supplier of chipsets, VIA's sales figures act as an early warning system for PC demand downstream. Fewer orders for VIA's chipsets means fewer motherboards means fewer PCs. ®
