RDRAM sales to grow over 400% this month

So says Kingston Technology

Demand for Rambus Direct DRAM is exploding, memory supplier Kingston Technology has claimed.

It reckons it will ship 4-5 times as many RIMMs this month as it did in June, and Q3's RDRAM sales will amount to 9-10 times more than Q2's sales.

The reason? According to Kingston, it's all down to Intel's Pentium 4 price cuts, which have had a knock on effect on mobo sales too, as we've reported in the past. Distributors are snapping up RIMMs to sell on to resellers keen to target P4-owning punters.

Kingston also pointed to an end to Intel's scheme to bundle RIMMs with processors sold into the retail market, according to a DigiTimes report.

Of course, how much such an increase in sales will boost RDRAM's overall marketshare remains to be seen. RDRAM certainly has a long way to go to match SDRAM sales, though the surge will help narrow the gap with DDR SDRAM, both in terms of volume and pricing. ®
