Intel's gigahertz Celerons coming this quarter
Sources claim
Intel will indeed ship a 1GHz Celeron sooner rather than later - and phase out the desktop Pentium III more quickly than the company suggested earlier this week - if sources cited by The Inquirer are to be believed.
The 1GHz Celeron will be accompanied by a 1.1GHz part. Both will ship before the end of September. By then, the 1GHz, 1.13GHz and 1.2GHz PIIIs will have been phased out - three months sooner than Intel comments that the desktops would be gone by the end of the year suggests. A 1.13GHz Celeron will arrive early next year.
Gigahertz Celerons and the end of the desktop PIII were previously scheduled for early to mid-2002. On Tuesday, Intel said it would accelerate the demise of the PIII to help drive sales of the Pentium 4.
The sources also say 26 August will mark Intel's next big round of price cuts, signalled by comments made this week by Intel Architecture Group chief Paul Otellini. By then, the 2GHz P4 will have launched - at $562, The Inquirer suggests - alongside the 1.9GHz P4, at around $450. Those two prices will fall to around $400 and $270, respectively on 26 August.
The 1.1GHz Celeron will launch at $102, and the 1GHz Celeron at $90. All prices are per processor sold in batches of 1000. ®
