AMD to take Mobile Athlon 4 to 1.3GHz by year's end
Durons to speed up to, to 950MHz
AMD is set to accelerate its mobile Athlon 4 processor to 1.1GHz in the coming months, with 1.2GHz and 1.3GHz versions of the chip coming in Q4.
The chip maker will also ship a 900MHz version of its mobile Duron during Q3, followed by a 950MHz part in the December quarter. Like the Athlon 4, these top-end Durons will be based on AMD's 0.18 micron Palomino core.
Come 2002, however, and both families will be augmented with chips based on the 0.13 micron Palomino die-shrink codenamed Thoroughbred. We hear Thoroughbred-based Athlons will ship February 2002. The timing is exact - in the same month, Intel will release its first Mobile Pentium 4, based on its 0.13 micron Northwood core, at 1.5GHz and 1.6GHz. We reckon AMD will offer Thoroughbred Mobile Athlons at those clock speeds.
The faster Athlon 4s and Durons coming this year are designed to go up against Intel's 0.13 micron Pentium III-M, based on aka Tualatin. Intel is expected to launch the mobile Tualatins on Monday, at 866MHz, 933MHz, 1.0 GHz, 1.06GHz and 1.13GHz, with a 1.2GHz part following in Q4. ®
