NTL trials wireless broadband
Curiouser and curiouser
NTL is trialling wireless broadband services in London in a move that could extend the reach hi-speed Net access outside of its cable franchise areas.
It is looking to recruit punters in Gunnersbury, Wandsworth, Guy's hospital, Shooter's Hill and Croydon to take part in the trial, which is due to run until 15 November.
Once complete, NTL will assess whether users are happy with the technology. If successful, the service is expected to cost £34.99* a month, comparable to DSL services.
Those taking part can expect to receive download speeds of up to 512kbps downstream and 128kbps upstream.
Triallists will also need to have a clear and unobstructed view of one of NTL's transmitters.
Unfortunately, no one was available from the cableco by press time to shed further light on the trial. ®
* - yesterday we reported that the price was just £24.99 based on the information in NTL's FAQ. Hours later the FAQ was changed with a new price of £34.99. An NTL spokesman blamed the confusion on a "typo".
