Fujitsu invents world's most capacious 2.5in hard drive

Fujitsu claims it has achieved the "highest recording density in the world" for a hard disk mechanism through a new magnetic recording system.

The technology provides a data density of 100Gb per square inch, the practical upshot of which is that it allows 2.5in hard drives to hold up to 110GB of data

The technology comprises new read and write heads, and a denser recording medium for the hard disk platters. The magneto-resistive read head operates at twice the voltage of current read heads, allowing it to retrieve more signal out of the noise.

The system isn't far from its commercial release - Fujistu plans to sell hard drives based on the new technology later this year. In the meantime, the company will begin extending the data density the technology allows to 300Gb per square inch. ®
